Remarks & Notes
An ETR job heads west to Ojibway Yard in Windsor, Ontario. At this spot the ETR line crosses the old CASO Subdivision and Detroit River rail tunnel entrance aka "the cut". The CASO was built by the Canada Southern from Fort Erie to Amherstburg. When MCR bought the line shortly after it was built, they rerouted the line from Fort Erie to Windsor due to too much ice building up at the ferry slips in Amherstburg during the winter. In 1910 they completed the tunnel and shortly after that CP built a connector track from their mainline to gain access to the tunnel. Over the years the CASO went through several owners including NYC, PC, and Conrail before being sold to CP and CN in 1985. CP and CN jointly bought the line in order to keep American Class 1 railroads from buying it since CSX was still using the line at the time for trackage rights trains. CP and CN decided that the tunnel could be enlarged to handle excess height traffic. Up until then this traffic still had to cross the river via barge. In the very early 1990s CN pulled out of the Windsor tunnel project favouring the tunnel project between Sarnia and Port Huron. CP continued with a scaled down project and enlarged one of the tubes (the one on the right) and finished the project in 1994. Today, this part of the CASO is now part of the Windsor Subdivision which is part of CP's route from Toronto to Chicago and sees several trains a day. Trains only use the track and tube on the right now and the track and tube on the left are used for MOW access to the tunnel. The CASO is pretty much all ripped up between Windsor and Fort Erie accept for this part obviously, a chunk that CN still uses in Windsor further east from this location, and parts of the CASO are still used in Fort Erie. ETR runs a couple jobs a day and services several customers in Windsor and Amherstburg. They also interchange with CP and CN daily.
