Remarks & Notes
Peak summer travel season has begun, and Union Pacific’s combined City of Los Angeles-San Francisco is running in two sections, one to accommodate first-class travelers and a second for the coach trade. At 10:50 am on June 22, 1965, E9A 914 leads all-sleepers 1-103 past Tower A for the climb over Sherman Hill. First call for lunch will be issued shortly, and passengers will begin to move toward the dome diner, seen mid-train. In the evening, the train will perform an amoeba-like division in Ogden, Utah, one section proceeding via SP’s Overland Route as the City of San Francisco, the other continuing on UP rails to Los Angeles. A landmark for years at the west end of Cheyenne yards, Tower A will someday be immortalized in an unpainted Overland Models brass kit, still widely sought by collectors. Note also another luxury mode of travel just past the tower: the classic Airstream trailer parked by the side of the highway.
