Descending the 2.2% grade on the Southern Loops in Old Fort, NC, NCTM and Amtrak's joint Autumn Leaf Excursion exits a tight rock cut on the upper portion of the Loops while returning to Spencer from Asheville. Automatic brakes were used to bring the 27-car train downgrade, and one car's brakes overheated to the point that the train had to stop and let them cool off before continuing down to Old Fort.
In reality, it's just another day on Colonel A.B. Andrews's surveying route that was built on between 1875 and 1879, causing Asheville's population to increase 292% in the next decade.
