Elmore Shifter U85 is seen dragging roughly 13,000 tons of coal for Belews Creek across Virginian’s Black Lick Trestle in Kegley, Wv. This bridge holds the record for being the tallest on the former VGN standing at 200’ high and 910’ long.
In just five more days on October 1, 2015, Norfolk Southern would mothball over 30 miles of legendary mainline between Elmore and Princeton. Since then the line has only seen a few trains of empty hoppers going into long term storage; just another sad reminder of state of appalachian coal country.
