| With brake shoe haze trailing, a Chehalis Western log train has just descended the Tacoma Gulch with a maximum grade exceeding 3.0%. Due to current market conditions these Weyerhaeuser logs will be loaded onto a ship and exported to Pacific Rim countries instead of being milled locally. After the Milwaukee Road quit its Pacific Coast Extension, many segments of its remnants were still viable for rail service, this one serving as a prime example. Today this wooden trestle is still in use by daily Sounder commuter trains and also by Tacoma Rail Mountain Division freight trains. |
