Remarks & Notes |
The Chief takes on another load of Pacific Northwest lumber as it prepares for another trip to Mackinaw City. Due to heavy lumber traffic bound for the Michigan Northern connection the Chief was running nearly steady in the early 80's. One day as I was shooting photos one of the crew members approached and asked if I would like a job working on her. Being interested in the boat and young and foolish I said "maybe". Visions of riding in the pilot house were in my mind or maybe some other open air activity on the boat. Instead I was given a "grand tour" of the boiler area where this beast was hand fired...Did I mention it was June and it felt like you could have fried an egg as you made your way down to the firing area. I quickly decided that my then present occupations of framing houses and driving truck for the postal service beat a life of shoving coal in the belly of the Chief! |
