The L is for Lights!
New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad (NH) FL9 no. 2006 is on display at the Danbury Railway Museum, adorned with festive lights for the holiday season. The locomotive is one of 60 such dual-mode locomotives built specifically for the New Haven from 1956-1960. The "L" in the model number actually stands for "long," since it is longer than the standard F9 to include a larger steam heating boiler and electrical equipment for third rail operation. The additional weight of the equipment also required a three-axle rear truck to meet loading restrictions, giving the locomotives an uncommon five-axle B-A1A wheel arrangement.
