| Dangling Detail.
San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) cable car 10 is seen at rest just inside the car barn on Washington St. The inspection pit here allows a unique view of the car: one where the grip - which is typically below the street surface - is visible dangling below the car. The pits here not only allow for under car inspections as they do on other railroads, but also provide a location where the grip assembly can be removed from the car - a regular occurrence as wear from operation requires grip dies be replaced every three to four days! Car 10 was built by Carter Bros. in 1893, and sports the standard Powell St maroon livery. |
