The Blue Train behind two Class 14Es.
The 14Es were the first dual-voltage (3kV DC and 25kV AC) electric locos built for South Africa. The class leaders 14-001 to 14-003 were built in 1994 by a consortium including Siemens, Telefunken, ABB and Swiss Locomotive Works. A further 10 were later built locally under the designation Class 14E-1.
A total of 8 14Es and 14E-1s received Blue Train livery during service. In 2013 Class 14E1 no. 14-104 and in 2014 Class 14E no. 14-001 caught fire in two separate incidents while working the Blue Train, and use of the class was discontinued on that service soon after. All have been withdrawn.
