Can You Count Four Different Pairs? Amtrak 49 is led by AMTK 717 and 702 (P32AC-DM) while Webb Rail is in the background with a pair of domes and the elephant P42DCs sit on track 1 waiting to take 49 to Chicago. The standout new kids on the block, the P42Cs, watch the action around them. Amtrak P42Cs 9701 and 9700 were parked in the MOW/Private Car Yard at the Amtrak Albany-Rensselaer, NY on Sunday June 1, 2025. Amtrak is planning to convert more P42DCs to P42Cs (cab car) to facilitate changing ends more quickly at terminals. As the P42 has a maximum allowable speed of 110 MPH, it is not suitable for Northeast Regionals, and will likely be seen mostly on trains like Empire Service. The conversion left in place most of the standard locomotive equipment in a deactivated state, and the locos are painted in Phase VII, the railroad's newest scheme.
Behind them are Webb Rail's WEBX 800144 and 800145, a pair of former Northern Pacific dome cars. In the afternoon, there were a number of moves in the station, but notably Amtrak Train 49 (Lake Shore Limited), which has back-to-back Phase III P32AC-DMs leading during a period of construction in the East River Tunnels next to New York Penn Station. Train 49 would wye before coming back into the station and joining the 449 (BOS-CHI) portion of the consist, which was laid up in the yard while the service was suspended over the weekend, with a pair of P42DCs to continue to Chicago.
