A Nice Break From the Usual… Pacific Surfliner cars and the Thanksgiving passenger crush, Amtrak sent some of their northern California equipment south to help out. As a result, Amtrak train 580, a Los Angeles to San Diego Pacific Surfliner, looked quite a bit different on Thanksgiving Weekend. The train was led by the only normal thing on this train, SC-44 2119, with the train consisting of seven Comet cars (former NJ Transit commuter cars), normally used on Amtrak's San Joaquins further north, with Non-Powered Control Unit (NPCU) CDTX 90225 (ex- Amtrak F40PH 225, built in April 1976 and converted to a "Cabbage," as the NPCUs were dubbed by railfans), trailing. Just before this train's arrival at the Fullerton Transportation Center, an announcement was made that train 580 would have no Pacific Business Class seating, and no food service; which I assume may have caused a few passengers to regret not eating at the station's Santa Fe Café.
