| An eclectic collection of locomotives rust away outside the Trenes Argentinos shops in Haedo, Buenos Aires. These engines ran during the Ferrocarriles Argentinos and Trenes de Buenos Aires eras, but have sat unused for several years. The Class 319.3 at the front of the deadline was built for Spanish state-owned railway Renfe in 1991 and imported to Argentina in 2009. Behind it is a Cockerill diesel-hydraulic switcher built in Belgium in the '70s. Next is a 1960's-built GAIA engine (manufactured in Argentina) still wearing the Trenes de Buenos Aires scheme. The pair of Class 1200 units on the left were also built in the 1960s by French company Brissoneau & Lotz for Portuguese Railways and imported to the country in 2009. These engines wound up in the country because of a government program which aimed to revitalize the national rail network. Used locomotives and rolling stock were purchased in bulk from Spain and Portugal for 223 million Euros, but most of the equipment was never used and sits in deadlines throughout the country. The transport minister who organized this purchase was later arrested for embezzlement. |
