Cosmopolitans. During a tour of the MTA Metro-North Railroad New Haven yard and shops on March 15, 2015, the M2 pair of MNCW 8706-8707 sit inside the MU shop during the inspection process. The hash mark safety stripes on the front end are evidence that this set has been through the in-house overhaul process. The 244 M2s (originally nicknamed 'Cosmopolitan') were built 1972-1977 by General Electric (with Budd Company, Canadian Vickers, and Avco) and assembled at the GE Erie, Pennsylvania plant. While similar to the interior and exterior design of the M1, to operate on both the former New York, New Haven and Hartford and New York Central Railroads, they can be power by either overhead wire or third rail. On April 18, 2019, this pair arrived at The Danbury Railway Museum in Danbury Connecticut, where it is on display today.
