Introduced in 1996, the Push-Pull Train has been the main fleet for Tze-Chiang Limited Express. The supply of driven units and carriages was from different makers, UCW in South Africa and Hyundai Precision & Industries in Korea. The fleet also expanded with carriages made by Tang Eng Iron Works in Taiwan. Due to the lack of maintenance support for the E1000 Series locomotives, TRA decided to phase out the driven units and have new locomotives hauling the trains.
