The era of diesel locomotives in Taiwan began in the late 1950s. EMD G12 was the second model TRA introduced, with four units for the initial stage. Following the satisfying performance, TRA made further orders to expand the fleet and classified it as R20 Series. Nowadays, they operate freight trains on the Western Trunk Line and serve as shunters at the freight yard.
