Rainbow Era
Throughout 2023, and now 2024, Norfolk Southern has experienced systemwide power shortages thanks to their 2019 locomotive purge. At the end of the year, after leasing a small fleet of ex-BNSF SD70s, Norfolk Southern purchased 36 CEFX AC44s (pictured on the right) and later 44 KCS (patched BNSF) C44-9Ws. In the coming years, this fleet of 80 new GEs will be rebuilt to the AC44C6M spec, allowing NS to further standardize its locomotive fleet.
