Lightning Stripes Through The Rock Cut. On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, MTA Metro-North Railroad 211 (New York Central) debuted, the third 40th Anniversary heritage unit. As has become the new tradition, the locomotive was facing south/east on Train 728 from Croton-Harmon to Grand Central Terminal. Incorporated in 1853, the New York Central Railroad was a major freight and passenger carrier until 1968 when it merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad to form Penn Central.
With three lines radiating north out of Grand Central Terminal plus service to Port Jervis on the former Erie, Metro North covers a wide swatch of New York's northern suburbs with varying terrains.
