Rock Island 675 has completed its weekend commuter run to Joliet from LaSalle St. Station, Chicago. Shortly the train will load city bound passengers and head back into Chicago. The introduction of yellow wings/noses were supposedly inspired by Union Pacific's influx of funds to help Rock Island survive in the later 1960s. CNW fought UP's attempt to acquire Rock Island and dragged that suit out long enough for liquidation of Rock Island. UP ultimately won, and ended up acquiring CNW and SP which brought many RI lines under its ownership, but this segment. UP now goes through Joliet on the old GM&O crossing this line between the station and the tower seen in the background.
Several Chicago railroads, including Burlington, Chicago & Northwestern, Illinois Central, Milwaukee Road and Rock Island, provided extensive service to and from the Chicago suburbs.
