During Amtrak's first year one highlight was the tour of the United Aircraft Turbo Train across the country. I was able to catch it during its evening open house at Minneapolis. It had arrived from Seattle and would continue east to Chicago the next day. An innovative train, Amtrak did try out other versions, and VIA operated UA consists for some time out of Toronto.
