| Westbounds on the MRL must climb 2 well known mountain passes on the way west from Laurel to Missoula. Also they must climb heavy 9 miles 1% grade between Townsend and Winston out of the Missouri River Valley. Here a load coal train bound for Roberts Bank, BC, crawls along the foothills of the Elkhorn Mountains. The train has been crawling along for the past 30" and is about to the the top of the 4300 foot summit as they pass over the east switch at Winston. Helena is in the horizon being only about 30 miles ahead. |
