Burlington Northern “Expediter” train 46 flies eastbound toward Somonauk, Illinois, on the frigid winter day of February 17, 1990. Leading the train is BN GP39M No. 2800, rebuilt from CB&Q GP30 No. 973, later becoming BN No. 2250, and still looking like a GP30 in BN’s original paint scheme.
Photos showing the railroad pole lines. The pole line used four basic electrical circuits - telegraph, telephone, signaling, and power. Modern technologies of fiber optics, microwave, radio, satellite, and computers have been replacing the pole lines.
