On a crisp fall afternoon, the Norfolk Southern Railway’s Pennsylvania Railroad heritage unit (affectionately known as the “Pennsy”) leads Norfolk Southern train 25A (Croxton, NJ-Atlanta, GA garbage/intermodal) south down the NS Washington District past Montpelier Station. Constructed by the Southern Railway in 1910, the depot is located adjacent to US President James Madison’s Montpelier Estate in Orange County, Virginia. It was built after businessman William DuPont purchased the estate. It was used for travels to and from the estate alongside supply deliveries.
