Remarks & Notes |
The South Draw Sand Train Pull
No other place on the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision combines grades, curves and tunnels like South Draw. This is the section of railroad the Rio Grande purchased the EMD Tunnel Motors to conquer. The Grade here exceeds 2%, multiple 10 degree curves and oxygen sucking tunnels make the pull here horrendous. The train in this photo is making about 12 mph on the pull and the strain on motive power is evident with the black smoke rolling out of Tunnel 16. Two more Big General Electric GEs are shoving just out of sight on the rear. |
