Soldiering On
MBTA 1309 notches it up at Tower A with a thoroughly-rusted GP40MC leader. This geep was built almost 50 years ago as a CN GP40LW, and ever since its overhaul to passenger specifications in 1997, it's been serving as a reliable workhorse on the T. With this locomotive coming up on its 50th birthday, it's becoming clear that its days are numbered. The 25 GP40MCs were originally supposed to be replaced by the HSP46s in 2013, but those locomotives have been in service for almost 10 years, and still, most GP40MCs continue to see regular service. Recently, the MBTA has transitioned the GP40MCs into Northside-only revenue service, which is usually a tell-tale sign that another new locomotive is on the horizon, and soon, the GP40s will be relieved of their duties.
