A northbound Milwaukee Road trackage rights train has just come off the K&I Bridge from Louisville and is about to split the streets of New Albany, Indiana at the intersection of Vincennes and E Main. This train will traverse the south end of the Monon to Bedford, Indiana where it will rejoin home rails onto Chicago. Of note in this photo are the rails of the PRR branch from Jeffersonville, IN to New Albany, which was removed in 1973, still embedded in the pavement of E Main Street. All of this chaos, which featured the PRR, Southern Rwy, B&O, Monon, and Milwaukee Road all crossing each other at grade on two separate diamonds buried in the pavement of this busy roadway intersection, was controlled by the operator at VI Tower, which can be seen standing imposingly over the frenetic scene.
