Conrail train APB-1 has arrived in Portland, Pennsylvania, and the power is positioned to allow the crew to visit the Portland Diner. When first delivered, Conrail’s ten C30-7’s had stars under their cab numbers to indicate that they were part of a program of operational cost comparison vs. ten SD40-2’s with similar markings. Apparently the EMD’s did better, with several repeat orders, while no more C30-7’s were purchased. Seven years later, Conrail purchased fifty of the more fuel efficient C30-7A’s.
