"Spring in the New River Gorge": The rear DPU of a CSX manifest train turns north in the New River Gorge enroute for Charleston, WV on May 18, 2021. Taken from the Concho Rim Overlook, it's not hard to imagine what the settlers and land surveyors had to conquer following the Civil War for the construction and completion of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. Filled with dense forests and a river not always appealing to cross, the New River Gorge is about as close to "wilderness" as you can get in the East. The C&O completed their mainline through the New River Gorge in 1873. Notice in the center top right of the image the mainline snaking its way ahead to Charleston, WV.
