Built in April 1948, Union Pacific NW2 1083 is looking good in the railroad’s latest paint scheme, which features the railroads shield on the cab. UP 1083 has retained its original single chime air horn for all these years (just days short of thirty-three years at this point), but this engine no longer sports numberboards (although the brackets are still there), it has acquired Harco centrifugal spark arrestors and its original curved windshields have been modified to less-expensive rectangular glazing. This switcher was assigned to UP’s East Yard, south/southeast of downtown Los Angeles in the city of Commerce, California, on a sunny March 23, 1981.
