Remarks & Notes
Side view of the 19D #2644 at the Mafikeng shed. In 1979 the 19D class locomotive #2644 underwent extensive modifications under the directions of David Wardale. He used the principles of the famous locomotive engineers Andre Chapelon from France and L.D. Porta from Argentina. The major modifications were to the exhaust and combustion systems, and included the fitting of a double Lempor exhaust and modifying the firebox for gas producer combustion. The success of the experiment led to the decision to construct the famous Class 26 (Red Devil). Unfortunately, this renaissance of steam was short lived and #2644 was taken from regular service in 1984. Note the size of the six axle tender which looks longer than the locomotive itself.
