All alone in Anniston. Perhaps it is fitting that Norfolk Southern Corp 4617 (GP59), the example of this class of 36 units produced by EMD most seen by railfans since it spent a good amount of time near the Amtrak Station in Anniston, Alabama, is tied to a former Southern Railway car as seen here on August 1, 2015. The most famous of this class was certainly NS 4610, which was painted in a Southern Railway tribute scheme. With the recent retirement and sale of the remaining GP59s that have not been otherwise rebuilt, it was reported that NS 4617 was sold to Carload Express and renumbered 4551. And while no other client besides NS would order the GP59, it did ultimately for the basis for the design of the EMD F59PH.
