Fifty years ago tonight I was at New Haven, CT, to record the final hours of the New Haven Railroad before it was absorbed into Penn Central at midnight. On that rainy New Year's eve the final NH-operated eastbound edition of the railroad's premier train, the New York-Boston Merchants Limited, paused at the station behind a a pair of FL9s. The car knocker's lantern left a trail as he walked the engines during the time exposure.
