Twilight December 4 in the final days of the 1965 Colorado sugar campaign, Great Western Sugar Company 13, an 0-4-0T, simmers at the Loveland plant. Long after steam has vanished elsewhee from even short line railroading, Great Western’s 13 dinkies soldier on, the largest fleet of steam locomotives in freight service anywhere in the U.S. Many will remain on the job into the 1970s, and number 13 will work the Loveland headquarters until 1976. Then it will be transferred to Fort Morgan, the last active GW plant. After the final, 1983, campaign the engine will be put on display there as a reminder of a closed chapter in Colorado agricultural and railroading history.
