Birdsboro Steel’s 45-tonner stands outside the foundry and fabrication complex in Birdsboro, PA. Birdsboro steel had three steelmaking furnace complexes in its history. The third, located across the Schuylkill River from town, operated until 1963, and was the last active home of the former Reading 0-4-0 camelback now at Strasburg. This location, originally built by a company called Armorcast in the 1940’s to build tanks for the war effort, closed in 1988. The ex-Army GE now resides on the Wanamaker, Kempton, & Southern tourist line.
