One of the classiest of all F-unit paint schemes adorned CB&Q’S “greybacks,” an attractive off-white -- officially “imitation aluminum” -- with red stripes and a distinctive wing-like nose emblem. In gathering rain, F3 127A/B wear it proudly, eastbound at Sand Creek, where the Q crosses the UP just north of Denver. On May 10, 1966 both units have seven months’ work ahead of them before the railroad sends them to EMD at LaGrange as trade-ins on new GP40’s. The Q bought about 100 F3 A and B units in several versions in the late 1940s; these are the early phase 3 model, with full-length chicken wire grille along the upper carbody.
