A lone SD9 flying green flags heads west with a mainline local. This is an unusual shot in that, by 1972, Southern's six SD9s and lone SD7 (all inherited from C of G) were generally in captive service in Atlanta and Birmingham. It was also odd to see a road train with a single unit on the Birmingham-Columbus main in those days.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
Selected photos of locomotives, passenger cars, and rolling stock in the Southern's livery as well as other assets once belonging to or used by the Southern.
