Remarks & Notes |
The Silver Meteor is running about 15 minutes early on this Easter Sunday as it rolls through Lincoln interlocking at 10:09am. The train will gain even more time and arrive at New York Penn Station by 10:45am. There are several interesting artifacts present at this location. The decommissioned Lincoln tower stands at left and is now used by Amtrak maintenance personnel. The marker for MP 26 can be seen at right. The track located behind this marker diverges from track 4 of the Northeast Corridor to the right of 605. This spur once connected to the Perth Amboy Branch of the Lehigh Valley Railroad which crossed under the NEC at this location. The connecting track was used by through Lehigh Valley passenger trains until the early 1890s as the PRR was LV's only link to the major population centers of Newark and New York City. By the late 1890s Lehigh Valley had their own route to Newark, and a new PRR connection was built at Hunter interlocking. The switch diverging left near the rear of the train leads to the 0 track and is used by Conrail freights operating to/from Metuchen Yard. |
