History in the making. The construction of a concrete deck that will span the entire open air portion of railroad prior to entering Penn Station is about half way complete in this shot. The construction project is referred to as the Manhattan West project, which will ultimately result in two 67 story sky scrapers on top of this area. The large yellow crane that spans an entire city block is referred to as "the launcher." It ironically rolls on its own set of rails to position and drop each section of concrete span one at a time while having almost no impact on the electrified railroad below. You can see the next span being assembled under the crane and about halfway complete. It has been an amazing process to watch progress over the past year, and it is one that will take with it the ability to photograph trains in daylight on the NEC in Manhattan. Here, an inbound Empire Service train and two NJT trains are seen in the what is left of the open area between the concrete deck and the Farley Post Office building, which will also be home to Moynihan Station in the near future.
