Under overcast skies, C2 #044 storms past a patch of beautiful sunflowers above the tiny village of Tuoyaozi. This empty train is bound for the coal mines at Hongguang (Red Mine) however, the steep grade taxes the little 76cm gauge 0-8-0. The Huanan Forestry Railway was the last steam powered narrow gauge in Manchuria, lasting until April 2011 before finally shutting down. Some of the railroad has since been scrapped however the locomotives remain, safe from the scrappers in the shuttered locomotive shed at Huanan.
