Steamscape: Cascade Trestle. A Denver & Rio Grande Western freight charges across Cascade Trestle on a sunny September afternoon hauling cattle and freight westbound toward Cumbres Pass. The trestle seen here is 137 ft. high and 408 ft. long, spanning Cascade Creek. It was built in 1889 for the D&RG and continues to serve today with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Off in the distance to the right by just a mile and a half is Osier, the location of a former section house and today, a lunch stop for tourist trains. This re-creation courtesy of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and Lerro Productions.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
