More than 100 years ago, the Rio Grande built three branchlines to tap the mineral riches of the Tintic Mining District. Today, only one of them remains, rusting away among the sagebrush of Utah's Goshen Valley. By the mid-1980's, D&RGW management had hoped this line would become a conveyor of gold ore, but the venture never materialized due to the expense of underground mining. Mother Nature slowly reclaims the right of way of this forgotten branch of the old D&RGW. The somewhat symmetric peaks of 11,928 ft. Mt. Nebo are at left on the east side of the valley.
