Remarks & Notes |
Class 40 no. 40 088 was scrapped well over 20 years ago. The cab was rescued and mounted onto a road vehicle as a publicity display for the Class 40 Preservation Society, which owns, runs and maintains two others of the class. Here we see the outfit on display at the Crewe Heritage Centre. To the right we can see the preserved Advanced Passenger Train. This was the original tilting train developed by British Rail in the 1970s/80s. Sadly, development never reached its full potential, as the scheme was stopped for political reasons. This is the only remaining unit of the few trains built for testing. Much of the technology then developed went into today's Pendolino tilting trains in daily use on the West Coast Main Line. |
