The evolution of grain is what I call this photo. An empty BNSF shuttle train passes the long closed elevator and water tank at Des Lacs, ND. Over the years, the efficiency of the small rural elevator was trumped by the bigger high throughputs like that of the one located on the horizon at Bertold, ND. All the dust that was being thrown up by the modern air seed drills the grain farmers were using to put in the 2010 crops, helped to create this dramatic sunset and tie the theme of grain together.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
