Remarks & Notes |
A lone geep has trundled to a stop on the ex New Haven Cape Main as it waits for the US Army Corps of Engineers' operator to lower the 1935 vintage Cape Cod Canal bridge so it can continue its eastward journey on to the Cape and down the Falmouth Branch. To the right of unit can be seen the vintage 1911 ex NH interlocking tower U416 which at the time of this photo still included the original 1930s era pneumatic US&S CTC machine that controlled the interlocking signals and derails for the bridge as well as the Canal Jct. switch. A Mass Coastal dispatcher controls train movements from a second floor perch in this classic 98 year old structure. All that will soon be history, however, as the interlocking was replaced with solid-state microprocessor controls about two months after this photo was taken. At least the tower will survive and remain manned part time for the foreseeable future. |
