The SP "Guadalupe Local" or "Guad" heads railroad west towards San Luis Obispo passing the Freericks family, who were heading south from San Simeon Castle to Los Angeles on our first California trip. Chances are the conductor was the SP's all time nice guy and stand-up fellow, Virlon Smoot, whom I would have the fortune of befriending 30 years later. Note the crates of produce on the Crud's running board, a gift from a local packing house. SP 2474 was delivered Aug 1967. It was retired as UPY #1079 in Feb 2009 (I would photograph it again at the W Colton deadline in Dec of 2008, also 30 years later).
