Fabulous photo and story Charles! Virlon is certainly an asset and great guy, the fabbled Coast Line is bursting with history, and the produce on the crud displays it all perfectly! Thanks for sharing this gem.

Great shot! My parents met in that area around that time in history. I think that if I was my dad and living there and then, I probably would have been too busy watching those trains to bother with anything else!

Thanks for posting this photo, Charles. I've been wanting to see a picture of this unit for a long time. I'm a huge Espee fan and think the SW1500's are pretty cool engines, but more importantly to me is that this unit in particular sports the date of my birth (Feb. 4, 1974)! It was nice enough to see the picture, but to get the history of the unit made it so much better. It's sad to know that it has been retired, but over 41 years of service is not too shabby! Hopefully another railroad will find it irresistible and keep her out on the rails moving cars.
