Longtime NWI-NRHS (Rockford, IL.) member Gerald Van Alstyne rode a Chicago-Springfield pre-Amtrak day fan trip. The group took an all-rail routing utilizing regularly scheduled trains, via the GM&O from Chicago, returning on the IC. The Green Diamond named-train has been cut from the IC timetables by this time, and with passenger service truncated south of Springfield the train was given the name of the "Govenor's Special" until it was finally put out of it's misery at Amtrak startup.
