Remarks: Longtime NWI-NRHS (Rockford, IL.) member Gerald Van Alstyne rode a Chicago to Springfield roundtrip the chapter sponsored prior to startup of Amtrak service. The group rode to Springfield on the GM&O from Chicago, and returned on the IC. After arrival from Chicago, this view was recorded of The Limited, train #1. Thanks for posting this classic GM&O image Gerald. The old radio station, phone booth, and mail truck really add a lot of character to this image.

Another classic Gerald. A lot has changed over the years. The phone booth is gone. The ties are made of concrete and there are fewer tracks. And I wonder how many years it has been since the Post Office pulled their truck right up to the train for the mail? The GM&O station to the right looks pretty much today as it did back then. Great photo.
