The Rio Grande Zephyr Passed through numerous spectacular canyons in its journey between Denver and Salt Lake City, including Gore, Little Gore, Glenwood, Ruby, and Debeque Canyons. Arguably the most intimate canyon on the Zephyr’s route was Byers Canyon, just west of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado. For about two miles, the railroad, the Colorado River, and US Route 40 share the narrow ravine, and the westbound Zephyr’s schedule put it in the canyon at the perfect time of day.
