When passenger E units were not available, Santa Fe ran its LaJunta to Denver train with freight F7s and a steam generator car. Weather-beaten 238 takes Train 191 out of Denver Union Depot on Aug. 29, 1970, eight months before the train’s demise with the advent of Amtrak. The 238 was eventually rebuilt into CF-7 2471 Dec. 1976, and later served IMC Fertilizer as well as the Blue Mountain & Reading who traded it in to GE.
