Frosty McEwen sunrise. The first rays of golden sun bathe the Powder River Valley, in Eastern Oregon, illuminating the altocumulus overhead and back-lighting the Sumpter Valley Railroad's little depot, just off the Sumpter Stage Highway.
This is the modern day Sumpter Valley Railroad's base of operations, and the eastern terminus of the line. The 3 ft. gauge tracks dead-end just 50 yards or so in the distance, just beyond where you see the little ore car. Back in 1891, this would have been the western terminus of the old Sumpter Valley Railway coming out of Baker City....for a time anyway. Eventually, the railroad made its way as far west as Prairie City. The original railway was removed back in the late 1940s. The present-day tourist railroad operates on roughly 5 miles of track, stretching from Sumpter, to the location you see here.
